As its name implies, our newest beer, Vernal Equinox, pays homage to the changing of the seasons. Drawing inspiration from the time-honoured Belgian wit beer tradition, it blends classic techniques with contemporary flair to create a brew that captures the essence of Spring.
Featuring a selected blend of rustic grains, including unmalted and malted wheat, spelt, and oats it has a light, cloudy appearance, and a smooth, velvety mouthfeel. Infused with traditional ingredients such as coriander and bitter orange peel, Vernal Equinox celebrates its Belgian roots. However, what truly sets this beer apart is the addition of grains of paradise—a distinctive aromatic component that adds layers of complexity to the flavour profile with hints of ginger and a refreshing, earthy bitterness.
Native to West Africa, Grains of Paradise are spicy seeds from the Aframomum melegueta plant, which have a unique flavour profile reminiscent of pepper, citrus, and floral notes. They’re prized in culinary traditions, especially in West African cuisine but beyond this they have a historical background in European medieval times when they were once wrongly believed to cause psychoactive effects. They are now however gaining global popularity for their potential health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
With its sparkling, sessionable nature, Vernal Equinox is the perfect companion for celebrating the longer days and warmer nights ahead. Whether you’re enjoying a pint at North Bar or savouring a can in the comfort of your own home, we can promise you a refreshing, herbaceous wit beer, without the worry of any psychological effects.
